Transcript for Episode #309:  “Rules of Engagement”

Teaser

Unnamed Planet
SG-1 is walking through some woods.  Sam is looking at one of her doohickeys as the rest of the team search for something.

Jack:  You know, that UAV needs a swift kick in the CPU.

Sam:  Aerial camera showed some sort of camp.

We can hear weaponsfire ahead.  SG-1 duck.

Sam:  That sounded like weaponsfire.

We then hear the sound of a staff weapon blast.

Teal’c:  Clearly a staff weapon blast.

They move towards the weaponsfire and reach a ridge of sorts.  They peer over the edge.  Sam looks through her binoculars and sees Jaffa firing on a group of men in SGC uniforms.  One of the ones with SGC gear is seen getting shot in the back by a staff weapon.

Sam:  They’re SG teams, sir.  Can’t make out their unit number.  They’re pinned down.

Sam gives her binoculars to Jack, who turns them to the men below them.  They are taking refuge behind some boulders.

Teal’c:  They are not returning fire.

Sam:  Out of ammo?

Sam:  Maybe.  They’re not supposed to be here at all.

Daniel:  SG-11?

Sam:  They were declared MIA eight months ago on P89-354.  What would they be doing here?

Teal’c:  Whoever they may be, they are about to die.

Jack (quietly into radio) :  Unidentified Sierra Gulf Unit, this is Sierra Gulf One.  We’re on your six.  Standing by to offer fire support.  Over. When there is no reply... Sierra Gulf Unit, your position is about to be overrun.  Over. There is still no reply. All right.  They’re either on a different frequency or they don’t have comms.  RV at the tree line.  Move.  Now.

SG-1 crawls over the ridge and hide behind some rocks near the other SG team.  Jack calls out to the team’s captain.

Jack:  Pull out!  We’ll cover your six!

Captain:  Identify yourself!

Jack:  Colonel Jack O’Neill, SG-1!

Captain:  Which quadrant?

Another soldier in an SG uniform is hit with a staff weapon.

Jack:  Get out of there!

Captain (to the other soldiers) :  Take them out!

Two of the soldiers in SG uniforms appear from hatches in the ground and begin to fire at SG-1.  Although they’re firing guns, the bullets are just red energy bolts.  Each member of SG-1 falls down as they are shot.

Training Camp Tent
SG-1 is lying on military-style camp beds.  Teal’c regains consciousness, the other three following suit a moment after him.

Jack:  Everybody okay?

Daniel:  Headache.  Bad headache.

Sam:  I thought I got shot.

Teal’c:  So it would seem.

Sam:  Must be some kind of stun weapons.

Jack:  Looked like MP-5s to me.  Well, all I can say is -

A very young soldier wearing an SG uniform and carrying a gun enters the tent.

Jack:  Hello.

Young Soldier:  Boy, are you guys gonna get it!

Jack:  Get what?  From whom?

Young Soldier (to Jack) :  Hey, you can’t talk!

Jack:  Why not?

Young Soldier:  Because you’re dead!

Jack:  Dead?

Young Soldier:  Pretending not to be dead will just get you into more trouble.

Jack:  More trouble than dead?

Young Soldier:  Come on, Colonel, you know better.  Stop breaking the rules.

Jack:  Sorry.  Who’s in charge here?

Young Soldier (forcefully) :  Casualties don’t ask questions.

Sam:  Uh, what rules are we talking about, exactly?

The young soldier approaches her and aims his gun at her threateningly.

Young Soldier:  I said, stop!

Daniel:  We’re just trying to understand - if we’re supposed to be dead, how are you supposed to kill us again?

The soldier then approaches Daniel and aims his gun at him.

Young Soldier:  You wanna find out, four-eyes, huh?

There is an moment of silence.

Daniel (quietly) :  Four-eyes?

Jack:  Easy, big fella.  Just...play dead.

Teal’c:  Indeed.

The young soldier glares at Daniel for a few more seconds, and then lowers his weapon.

Young Soldier:  Captain’s waiting for you.  Follow me.

The young soldier exits the tent and Jack rises off the bed.

Jack:  Anyone notice the patch?

Sam:  SG-X.

Teal’c:  There is no SG-X, O’Neill.

Jack:  Not under Hammond’s command, no.

The young soldier enters the tent again.

Young Soldier:  Hey!  I said follow me.

The young soldier exits once again.  Jack shrugs and the rest of SG-1 get up and follows the young soldier out of the tent.

Training Camp
The young soldier leads SG-1 through what looks like a military training site.  Young soldiers are going through various training exercises.  They all look to be in their late teens or early twenties.  One group of soldiers jogs past SG-1.

Jack (to the soldiers as they jog past SG-1) :  Hey, guys.

Teal’c:  They are no more than children.

Sam:  Playing some kind of war game, by the looks of things.  Who do you think they are?  NID, Colonel Maybourne?

Jack:  I wouldn’t put it past him.

The young soldier leads SG-1 into a tent.  The captain who ordered SG-1 shot is sitting at a table with his back to them.

Young Soldier (saluting) :  SG-1 reporting as ordered, sir!

Captain (without turning around) :  You are all casualties until fourteen hundred hours.

Jack:  Would that be Daylight Savings or Standard?

Captain:  You may not speak, except to answer a direct question by the evaluating officer.

The captain stands up and faces Jack.

Captain:  Is that clear?

Jack just smiles at the captain.  He looks irritated.

Captain:  Is this the way you behave in your quadrant, mister?

Jack:  I think ‘colonel’ is the proper way of addressing me, Captain.

Captain:  No rank is above strict adherence to the Rules of Engagement.  Rule 2, Article 4.  Unauthorized forces shall be shot on sight.  You were unauthorized.  In fact, you ruined our ambush.  Nearly half the enemy team got away!

Jack:  Carter, I’ve never been real big on regs.  Is this familiar to you?

Sam:  No, sir.

Teal’c:  They are familiar to me. (to the captain) Gel’vak, Jaffa.

Captain (startled) :  You’re not from D Quadrant.

Teal’c:  We are not.

Captain:  You came through the chappa’ai.  This is a challenge!

Daniel:  The...chappa’ai?

The captain looks as if he has said something wrong.

Jack:  Oy.

Young Soldier (to the captain) :  You meant the Stargate, sir.

Captain:  Stargate.  Of course.  We’ve been so long without challenges. (to Teal’c) I am sorry, Master Jaffa.  I have revealed myself and failed.

The captain produces a sidearm and offers it to Teal’c.

Captain:  You must execute me for the remainder of the day.

The young soldier gives Jack his gun.

Young Soldier:  You must execute me as well.

Jack takes the clip out of the gun and looks at it.  The bullets are red-tipped, just like the ones with which SG-1 were shot earlier.  Jack puts the clip back into the gun and presses a button on the bottom of the weapon that beeps as it turns on.  Jack turns it off again.

Jack:  Master Teal’c.  Might I suggest we...spare them this time?

Teal’c:  Very well...underling. Jack gives him a look. Captain, your full name and rank.

Captain (coming to attention) :  My Earth name is Captain Kyle Rogers, acting Quadrant A Commander, sir!

Sam:  Your Earth name?

Teal’c (to Rogers) :  Your standing orders given to you by your previous Jaffa Master.

Captain:  To practice the exercises of battle according to the Rules of Engagement until the return of our Lord Apophis!

Daniel:  Really?

Captain:  When we are ready for the final challenge, he will come.

Jack:  Don’t hold your breath.

Captain:  We will be ready.

Sam:  You’re training to serve Apophis wearing SG uniforms?

Captain:  To know the enemy.  Quadrant A is spared no detail.  We’ve studied long and hard and know much.

Sam:  About Earth.

Captain:  Oh, yes.  Corn and cotton are indigenous to North America.

Jack:  And that information could save your life one day.

Captain:  So, you see, Master Teal’c, my mistake will not happen again.  I am ready to infiltrate the Tau’ri at your command.

Teal’c:  That time has not yet come, Captain Rogers.

Daniel (to Rogers) :  So, if you’re pretending to be...who were those Jaffa attacking you?

Captain:  They were led by my second-in-command, Captain Nelson, as part of the daily exercise.  We have kept the Jaffa encampment separate so that we may better practice our Earth behavior.  Shall I have him sent for?

Daniel:  No, I don’t think that’ll be necessary.

Teal’c (to Rogers) :  Send for him.

Daniel:  Yes!  Send for him.

Captain Rogers glances at the young soldier and jerks his head.  He leaves the tent.

Captain:  How else may I serve?

Jack:  We’d like our weapons back.  The ones we came with.

Captain:  They were stored in the Armory Tent at the conclusion of this morning’s war game.

Teal’c:  Take us to them.

Captain:  As you wish.

Training Camp
Captain Rogers leads SG-1 through the camp.  SG-1 watches the soldiers training.  Some of them are stripped to the waist, and no symbiote pouch is visible.

Sam (to Jack) :  Colonel, none of them have symbiont pouches.

Jack:  I noticed that.

Teal’c:  Before Apophis requested asylum from the Tau’ri, there were but a handful of loyal Jaffa remaining in his service.

Daniel:  So he drafted ordinary humans?

Teal’c:  It is common practice among the Goa’uld to use humans as fodder during battle.  Especially when facing defeat.

Armory Tent
Captain Rogers enters the tent, followed by SG-1.  There are racks of various Earth weapons inside.

Jack (to Rogers) :  All right, Captain, we can handle it from here.

Captain:  I can assist you.

Teal’c (to Rogers) :  Shel’kek.

Captain:  Yes, Master.

Captain Rogers leaves and SG-1 starts to look at all the weapons.

Jack:  So, Teal’c.  How do you know about these rules of engagement?

Teal’c:  They are the code of battle during a young Jaffa’s training, spoken by Apophis himself.

Sam (holding up a gun with a red glowing crystal on the bottom) :  Teal’c, what about these?

Teal’c:  They are intar.

Jack puts on some of his gear that he finds.

Jack:  Short for...?

Teal’c:  Intar.

Jack just shrugs.

Teal’c:  They are used for training and only meant to stun.  They can be identified by this crystal.

Teal’c shows them the red crystal on the bottom of one of the guns.

Teal’c:  They can take the form of any weapon.

Sam:  Well, I got our GDOs, but my MP-5’s still missing.

Teal’c:  As is my staff weapon.

Jack:  All right, Teal’c, I want everyone in one place, just to make sure.  Can you handle that?

Teal’c:  I can.

Jack (to Sam and Daniel) :  You two keep looking.

Jack and Teal’c then exit the tent.

Training Camp
Captain Rogers is waiting for Jack and Teal’c.

Teal’c:  Captain Rogers.  Where are the weapons with which we arrived?

Captain:  They were returned to the Armory Tent, of course.

Teal’c:  Do you possess a vocume?

Captain:  Yes, sir.

Teal’c:  Use it.

Captain:  Yes, Master Teal’c.

Captain Rogers walks into a tent.

Jack:  What did you tell him to do?

Teal’c:  I instructed him to use a training instrument to assemble his men for inspection.  It may serve to emphasize our authority.

Captain Rogers exits the tent and has a small gray ball on a stand.  He sets it on the ground and steps away.  A beam of light shoots up from the ball and forms a giant holographic image of Apophis.  It looks to be about forty feet tall.

Apophis (recorded hologram) :  Warriors of Apophis, assemble before me and listen to he that possesses the vocume.

Sam and Daniel come running out of the Armory Tent upon hearing Apophis’ voice.

Sam:  Sir?

Jack:  Just a huge honkin’ Apophis, Major.  Nothing to worry about.

All the soldiers nearby gather around the hologram.  Some are dressed as SGC personnel, and others are dressed as Jaffa.

Apophis (recorded hologram) :  The warrior before you speaks in my name.  Heed his words.

The hologram disappears.

Captain (to Teal’c) :  I would be honored if you would inspect my warriors, Master.

Teal’c bows his head, showing his agreement.  The shot cuts to later, after all the soldiers have assembled and prepared for inspection.

Captain:  Company!

The soldiers come to attention.

Teal’c:  Ready weapons for inspection.

The soldiers pull out their weapons.  Jack and Teal’c walk along the rows, inspecting the weapons.

Teal’c:  You do yourself proud, Captain Rogers.

Jack looks at the clip of one of the soldiers’ guns.  The bullets are red-tipped.

Captain Rogers and Teal’c come to a young man wearing a Jaffa uniform.

Captain:  Master Teal’c.  This is my second-in-command, Novar.  For the games, he leads the side of the Jaffa warriors.  His Earth name is Captain Nelson.

Nelson (to Teal’c) :  Most of my warriors are engaged in the day’s battle, Master.  I will relay your words to them after the battle.

Jack:  Master Teal’c...if I may?

Teal’c (to the assembled soldiers) :  This is Colonel O’Neill.  He is much loved by Apophis.

Jack gives him a look, and moves to stand beside Teal’c.

Teal’c (to Jack) :  You may address the warriors.

Jack (to the soldiers) :  Apophis wanted me to tell you that you’ve all been doing a wonderful job.  Couldn’t ask for more.  Well done.  But...he also wanted me to tell you the whole invasion of the Tau’ri idea has been cancelled due to...rain.

Captain Rogers looks confused.

Jack:  So.  The war games are officially over as of right... Jack goes to check the watch on his wrist, but then realizes he doesn’t have one. ...now.  You can all go home.

Nelson (confused) :  Sir?

Jack:  It’s over, Nelson.  Go tell your buddies to quit fighting.

Captains Rogers and Nelson look at each other suspiciously.

Nelson (suspiciously) :  You speak more like a Tau’ri than a warrior of Apophis.

Jack:  Thanks.  You’re not so bad yourself.  Who taught you?

Nelson:  If you are who you say you are, you already know the answer to that, sir.

Jack:  Nelson, I am ordering you to recall your men from the field.

Nelson:  Article 7, Section 3 clearly states that once the battle has commenced, it cannot be stopped.

Jack:  Well, you’re obviously referring to the old Article 7.

Armory Tent
Sam and Daniel are getting done looking for the missing weapons.  Sam puts a final intar back onto the rack.

Sam:  That’s it.

Daniel:  That means those kids are out there playing war games with real weapons.

Sam (into her radio) :  Colonel?

Jack (over radio) :  Go ahead, Carter.

Sam:  So far, all we’ve recovered is one 9 millimeter and one MP-5.

The shot cuts to Jack, Teal’c, and the soldiers outside.

Jack (into his radio) :  Roger that.  Keep looking.

Teal’c (to Rogers) :  I require all of Quadrant A to be assembled, including those engaged in the games. When Captain Rogers doesn’t move... Immediately!

Captain:  As Captain Nelson stated, Master...

Teal’c (angrily) :  Do you wish to be punished?

Captain:  I’ll not fail your challenge a second time, Master Teal’c.

Teal’c looks at Jack.

Jack:  Tell them the truth.

Teal’c (to the soldiers) :  Warriors of Apophis.  Hear me.  Apophis has been slain in battle with his enemies.

The soldiers don’t react.  Captain Rogers rolls his eyes ever so slightly.

Jack:  Hey!  He’s telling you the truth.  The battle you’ve been preparing for is never gonna happen.  He’s not coming back.

The boys still don’t react.  Nelson smiles, clearly not believing him.

Jack (to himself) :  Hello?  Is this mike on? (raising his voice) We’re trying to tell you something important here!

Captain:  Apophis is a god.  And gods cannot die.  Therefore, Apophis cannot be dead.

Nelson:  And anyone who says otherwise is either testing us...or is a traitor.  Sir.

Captain:  Now, we’ve passed your challenge.  If there’s nothing else, sirs, we’re scheduled to join the games in progress. (to the assembled soldiers) Company!  Dismissed!

The soldiers begin to move out.

Teal’c (to Jack) :  Apophis has lived for thousands of years.  It is as if we have said the sun will never rise again.

Jack:  It just might not for some of those kids if they don’t wise up.

Armory Tent
Sam is aiming an intar at the young soldier. Jack and Teal’c enter the tent.

Jack:  What’s going on?

Young Soldier:  I’m trying to get a weapon, sir.  I’m already late; the games have started.

Sam:  Colonel, one MP-5, Teal’c’s staff weapon, and two 9 millimeters are still unaccounted for.

Outside, we can hear a horn blowing.

Daniel:  What does that mean?

Young Soldier:  It means my team needs reinforcements.

Jack:  No, the game is cancelled.

Young Soldier:  You can’t do that!

Jack:  I believe I can.

Jack takes Sam’s intar and shoots Hibbard, who falls unconscious.

Jack:  Everybody grab an intar.

Jack tosses Teal’c an intar and picks one up for himself before leaving the tent.  Sam and Daniel grab intars and exit the tent.

Woods
SG-1 and Captain Rogers are going through the woods.  They come upon a soldier dressed in an SG uniform lying on the ground, a large burn in his side still smoking.  Sam hurries over to him and checks to see if he’s alive.

Sam:  It’s a staff weapon wound.  He’s dead, sir.

A staff weapon blast strikes the ground nearby.

Jack:  Take cover!

Everyone takes cover as the soldier with the staff weapon fires at them again.

Captain:  Colonel!  I’ll draw his fire.

Jack:  Negative!  That is a real weapon!

Captain (smiling confidently) :  Apophis will protect me.

Jack:  I said, stay down!

Jack tries to grab Captain Rogers, but misses as he jumps up and runs into the open to get a clear shot.  Captain Rogers fires several times with his intar, but misses every time.  The Jaffa shoots his staff weapon once and Captain Rogers is hit and collapses to the ground.  Jack shoots the Jaffa with his own intar.

Jack (to Sam) :  Secure that weapon!

Sam:  Yes, sir!

Sam runs towards the Jaffa.  Captain Rogers is lying on the ground, still smoking from the staff weapon blast.  Daniel rushes over to him.

Captain (obviously in pain) :  Have I displeased Apophis?

Daniel:  No.

Teal’c:  Apophis would be proud.

Captain Rogers nods, then lifts his hand from his wound to see the blood on his hand.

Captain:  This is the final challenge.

Captain Nelson and some soldiers arrive.

Nelson:  What happened?

Captain:  The day has come, Nelson.  The final challenge.

Captain Nelson touches Captain Rogers’ wound and he cries out in pain.  Captain Nelson raises his hand and looks at his blood.

Nelson:  Blood has been shed.

Captain:  Prepare the men.  The challenge must begin at first light.

Nelson:  Yes, sir.

Captain Nelson walks away.

Jack (to Teal’c) :  What’s he talking about?  The final challenge?

Teal’c:  It is a day in a warrior’s training when first blood is shed.  The games become real.

Jack:  Oy.

Training Camp
Jack is seen walking through the camp, which is buzzing with soldiers getting ready for the final challenge.

Sam (over the radio) :  Colonel?  We’ve found something.  Our weapons were all turned back in after the war games, sir.

Jack (into his radio) :  Roger that.  Keep ‘em secure.

Medical Tent
Captain Rogers is lying on a bed, Daniel treating to his wound.  Captain Nelson is standing closeby as Jack enters.

Jack (to Daniel) :  How’s he doing?

Nelson:  Apophis will save him.

Daniel:  Well, actually, no.  As a matter of fact, there’s probably nothing more we can do for him as long as we stay here.  There’s probably internal injuries.

Jack:  So, we’ll take him back with us.

Nelson:  You cannot.

Jack:  For cryin’ out loud...

Nelson:  You know as well as I do that the rules forbid entry or exit of the sector before the final challenge, wounded or not.

Jack:  Right.  Right, right.

Captain (obviously in pain) :  Apophis would be disappointed in me if...if there were an exception made for myself.

Daniel:  Well, what if I told you we were bringing you to see Apophis personally, to show him that blood has been shed and that your quadrant is truly ready for his return?

Captains Rogers and Nelson exchange glances, considering the proposal.

Daniel:  If we don’t bring you back with us, then Apophis will know you’ve failed our challenge and never return.

Captain:  Then I must go.

Jack:  Good.

Captain Nelson offers his hand to Captain Rogers.

Nelson:  Tell him we will make him proud.

Captain Rogers takes Captain Nelson’s hand.

Captain:  I will.

SGC Gate Room
The Stargate kawhooshes out, forming the usual blue event horizon, and SG-1 steps out.  Teal’c and Daniel are carrying Captain Rogers on a stretcher.

Jack:  We need a medical team!

Two medics appear with a gurney, and Teal’c and Daniel lay the stretcher on top of it.  Captain Rogers is looking around, confused.  General Hammond enters.

Hammond:  What happened, Colonel?

Captain (to Hammond) :  My lord?

Jack:  Actually, we just call him...General Hammond.

Captain:  Where is Apophis?

Jack:  He’s not here.  Sorry.

Dr. Fraiser runs into the Gate Room.

Fraiser:  What have we got?

Captain Rogers suddenly realizes he was tricked, and begins to struggle to get off the stretcher.

Captain:  Liars!  Traitors!

The medics begin to restrain him.

Fraiser:  Easy, easy!

Captain (yelling) :  You will be punished!  He will avenge me!

Fraiser (to Jack) :  Who is this, sir?

Jack:  His name’s Rogers.  Despite appearances, he’s not SGC.

Captain (yelling and struggling) :  He will strike you down!  You will all die!

Fraiser (to the medics) :  Go!  Let’s get him to the infirmary.

The medics wheel the gurney out of the Gate Room, while Captain Rogers is still yelling and struggling to break free.

Hammond (to Jack) :  I’d like to debrief A.S.A.P., Colonel.

Jack:  Yes, my lord.

SGC Briefing Room
We see SG-1 and General sitting around the table, debriefing, with some of the intars on the table.

Hammond:  What’s this final challenge all about?

Teal’c:  In my training, it is when we received our actual staff weapons.  The two opposing camps then engaged in battle until one side emerged victorious.

Sam:  You killed each other?

Teal’c:  The Goa’uld wish only the strong to prevail, Major Carter.  I was among the victors.  We were then honored by Apophis and I became a member of his personal guard.

Hammond:  And that’s what’s about to happen to those boys.

Jack:  As long as they don’t have real weapons with which to play, I don’t see how.

Sam:  Well, the only lethal weapons I found in the armory belonged to us.  The rest were intars.

Teal’c:  The Jaffa Masters who once supervised their war games have long ago abandoned them, yet they have maintained their games until this day without fail.

Daniel:  So what are you saying?

Teal’c:  That they are extremely resourceful and most determined.

Sam:  So, they might try to fulfill the final challenge whether they’re issued lethal weapons or not.

Teal’c:  It is possible.

Daniel:  Well, let’s face it:  if they really wanted to kill each other, they don’t need guns to do it.

Sam (to Jack) :  We have to go back there, sir, and try to prevent this from happening.

Daniel:  General, we’re indirectly responsible for all this.  They think that we were sent through to start this.

Hammond:  I understand that.

Jack:  What we need to send back there is a team of shrinks.  Those kids are out there.

Hammond:  That may be so, Colonel, but before I send you or anyone else into a battle zone, I want to know what’s going on on that planet.

Jack:  Why don’t I see what I can get out of Rogers?

Hammond:  Very well.

SGC Infirmary
Captain Rogers is lying in bed while Dr. Fraiser is talking to Jack nearby.

Fraiser:  He won’t eat, he won’t speak...except to call me a shol’va.

Jack:  You must be doing a good job.

Fraiser:  There’s no internal injury.  He mustn’t have taken the full force of the blast.  Physically, he’ll be fine.   Emotionally...that’s another story.  He’s very angry, Colonel.

Jack:  Where’s his tray?

Fraiser:  Over here. Fraiser gives him the tray. Good luck.

Jack walks the tray over to Captain Rogers’ bedside and puts it down on a cart beside the bed.  He then picks up a sandwich and takes a bite.

Jack:  Ole Doc Fraiser says you haven’t been eating.

Captain:  It’s poison.

Jack:  It’s hospital food; of course it is.

Jack takes another bite of the sandwich.

Jack:  Mmm, tuna.

Captain:  Go to Sokar.

Jack:  It’s ‘Go to Hell,’ actually.  Which, by the way, is a very rude thing to say to a person offering you a sandwich.

Captain:  It means the same.

Jack:  You’ve got a point.

Captain:  I will reveal nothing.  You may begin torturing me.

Jack:  Oh, I’ve already begun.  This... (holding up the sandwich) ...is the infamous tuna torture.

Jack picks up the plate with the other half of the sandwich on it and waves it under Rogers’ nose, teasing him.

Jack:  Last chance.

After a second, Rogers reluctantly picks up the other half of the sandwich and takes a bite.

Jack:  Good.  So, you and I should have a little talk about this final challenge thing.

Captain:  We will battle to the death and Apophis will choose the victors as his personal guard.

Jack:  All right, I’m going to tell you the absolute truth right now.  Apophis is dead.

Captain (vehemently) :  Gods cannot die!

The effort of his vehemency makes Captain Rogers wince in pain.

Jack:  Why do think he’s been gone for so long?  Why have all the Jaffa Masters left?  Apophis was on his way out when you got drafted.

Captain:  You lie.

Jack:  What if he told you himself?

Captain (smiling) :  If Apophis can speak, then he cannot be dead.

SGC Infirmary
A television and VCR are set up beside Captain Rogers’ bed.  Daniel puts a tape into the VCR.

Daniel:  When Apophis came to us, he’d already been tortured.

Captain:  Impossible.  He is a god.

Sam:  The images we’re about to show you are of Apophis just before he died and his body was sent to Sokar.

Captain:  Gods cannot die.

Jack:  So you keep saying.  Have a look.

The tape begins to play and shows Apophis in his last moments before dying in the previous episode “Serpent’s Song.”

Apophis (on the tape) :  Help me.  A host.  I am...afraid.

On the tape, Apophis lies still for a moment, and then takes a loud shuddering breath, which makes Captain Rogers jump, and then he dies.

Captain (horrified) :  What magic is this?

Jack:  No magic.  I was there.

Teal’c:  As was I.

Captain (finally accepting the truth) :  Then it is true.

Teal’c:  It is.

Captain:  What will you do to us?

Sam:  We’re not going to do anything to you.  We wanna help you.

Jack:  You can go home, wherever that is.  War’s over.

Captain:  No, it’s not.  Because tomorrow the final challenge begins...

Captain Rogers’ eyes begin to fill with tears.

Captain:  ...and many of my men will die. (nodding at Apophis on the screen) For him.

SGC Briefing Room
Captain Rogers is sitting at the table.  SG-1 and General Hammond are questioning him.

Hammond:  What’s your real name, son?

Captain:  My true name is Rafiatrey, sir.

Jack:  Your Earth name’s Kyle; can we call you Kyle?

Captain:  That would be fine, sir, I’m very used to that.

Hammond:  How long have you been on that planet?

Captain:  We were brought there through our chappa’ai five cycles ago from a number of different worlds.

Sam:  Right after we blew up Apophis’ ships.

Captain:  He commanded that we worship no other god but him.  He left many Jaffa warriors with us.  They taught us everything.

Hammond:  Who taught you all about Earth, our uniforms, weapons?

Captain:  Near the beginning, Apophis captured one of your SG teams and forced them to teach us.

Sam:  SG-11.

Captain:  Yes.  At first, that was all they would reveal.  Our Jaffa masters forced them to say things.  We listened to your speech, observed your ways, but they did not last long.

Hammond:  What happened to them?

Captain:  One day, their bodies were put on display in the encampment.  I...do not know how they died - only that they refused to tell the Jaffa masters all that was asked of them.  Then our Jaffa Masters began to leave us, one by one.  They said, to help Apophis win a great battle.  And then we were alone.

Hammond:  Thank you for your cooperation, son.

Captain:  May I now ask for your cooperation, sir?

Hammond:  Go on.

Captain:  As we speak, my men are preparing for the final challenge.

Hammond:  I was under the impression your weapons are non-lethal.

Captain:  They are.  But before Master Gartok left, he showed Captain Nelson and myself a cave.  Inside were weapons intended for the final challenge.  Real weapons.

Jack:  What are we talking about here...weapons-wise?

Captain:  They are exactly like your own.  MP-5s.  He told us it was with those that we would one day infiltrate the Tau’ri and destroy you. (to Hammond) May I request permission to be returned to my men, sir, to tell them what I’ve learned and to try and stop them?

Daniel:  They won’t believe you; you know that.

Captain:  They are under my command.

Sam:  Teal’c, is the vocume capable of recording other images?

Teal’c:  Yes, that is correct.

Sam:  Well, then, Colonel O’Neill’s already thought of the solution.

Sam looks to Jack.

Sam:  I think you know where I’m going with this, sir.

Jack:  Haven’t a clue.

Sam:  Well, seeing Apophis die was enough to convince Kyle.  All we have to do is show that same image to everyone else.

Hammond:  With the vocume device?

Sam:  Yes.

Teal’c:  I believe O’Neill’s solution could be successful.

Hammond:  In the middle of a battlefield, combining alien technology with our own?

Sam:  Sir, the technical part of transferring the data to the vocume I can figure out.  We’ve already been experimenting with interfacing Goa’uld technology with our own.  The problem will be getting there.

Jack:  We do have the intars, General.

Hammond:  What good will they do?

Jack:  We could shoot first and ask questions later.

Captain Rogers stands up.

Captain (to Hammond) :  May I request permission to join them?  Sir.

General Hammond looks at Jack for his opinion.

Jack:  They are his men, General, and he might provide the tactical advantage we need to pull this off.

General Hammond considers the proposal, and then nods.

SGC Corridor
SG-1 and Captain Rogers exit an elevator and are moving towards the Gate Room, wearing combat gear and camouflage paint on their faces.

Jack:  Final challenge scenario – let’s hear it one more time.

Captain:  My elite SG squad is to defend the encampment from the invading force of other SG teams, led by Captain Nelson.  The attackers are greater in number, but the defenders have greater firepower.

Sam:  But everyone on both sides will be in SG uniforms.

Captain:  As it would have been when we infiltrated Earth, yes.

They enter the Gate Room, where the Stargate is already active.

Jack:  All right, once we take the encampment, we become the defenders to buy Carter time.  Is everyone clear on that?  Daniel?

Daniel (obviously not paying attention) :  What?

Jack:  Good. (to Captain Rogers) You, stay with Carter, who will watch you like a hawk.

Sam:  Yes, sir.

Hammond (over the intercom; from the control room) :  SG-1, you have a go.

SG-1 and Captain Rogers walk up the ramp and through the Stargate.

Unnamed Planet
SG-1 and Captain Rogers are moving through the woods.  Weaponsfire can be heard in the distance.  A soldier in an SG uniform begins to shoot at them, so they take cover behind some trees.  Without any warning, Captain Rogers jumps up and runs down the path, drawing the soldier’s fire away and allowing Sam to shoot the soldier with her intar.  Jack shoots a second soldier, and then runs after Captain Rogers, grabbing him roughly by the front of his uniform.

Jack (angrily) :  I told you to stay with Carter!

Captain:  I was just trying to draw his fire.

Jack (angrily and loudly) :  You will listen to every word I tell you, and you will do everything I tell you or I will shoot you myself!  Is that clear?!

Jack hits Captain Rogers on the head before moving away.

Captain (almost to himself) :  Yes, sir.

Training Camp
Soldiers in SG uniform are seen patrolling the camp.  SG-1 cautiously makes their way towards the middle of the camp, using the tents as cover.  Once they are in position, Captain Rogers steps out into the open and calls out to one of his men.

Captain:  Status report, Sergeant!

Sergeant:  Captain Rogers?

Captain:  I have just returned through the chappa’ai with a message from Apophis.  I have glorious news.

SG-1 uses the distraction to shoot the other soldiers with their intars.  Captain Rogers shoots the sergeant himself.

Jack (to Captain Rogers) :  Get the vacuum.

Captain (correcting Jack) :  Vocume.

Jack:  Whatever.  Get it.  Carter, set it up.  Teal’c, with Carter; Daniel, with me.

Captain Rogers runs off to retrieve the vocume.  Meanwhile, Sam and Teal’c enter the armory tent to set up her laptop as Jack and Daniel take cover behind a wall of sandbags.  Captain Rogers enters the armory tent with the vocume.  Outside, soldiers in SG uniforms are seen coming out of the trees.

Daniel:  Here they come.

Jack:  I got some at nine o’clock here, too.

Jack and Daniel start to fire their intars at the approaching soldiers.  Captain Rogers runs over and joins Jack and Daniel.

Armory Tent
Teal’c is just finishing setting up the vocume.  Meanwhile, Sam is typing on her laptop.

Teal’c:  It is ready.

Sam:  Good.  I’m not.  Give me a second.

Training Camp
Jack, Daniel, and Captain Rogers are under heavy fire.

Jack (into his radio) :  Any time, Carter.

The shot cuts to inside the armory tent.

Sam (into her radio) :  Yes, sir!

Teal’c (to Sam) :  What is the delay?

Sam (typing as she talks) :  You can’t just combine Goa’uld technology with ours with a snap of a finger.  I have to match the frequency the vocume operates on before I can record and transmit.

Teal’c exits the tent to help the other three, who are busy shooting at the attacking soldiers.

Teal’c (in warning) :  O’Neill!

A high-pitched whistling sound can suddenly be heard.

Jack:  Incoming!

They all duck and cover their heads as an explosion occurs not too far away.

Jack:  Rogers!  What the hell was that?

Captain:  Mortars!

Jack:  What else is in that cave?

Captain:  Stingers, M60s, M72s...

Jack:  You’re telling me this now?  What the hell?  Get down!

They all duck once again as another mortar falls.

Jack:  Damn it, Carter!

The shooting continues.  Meanwhile, inside the armory tent, Sam has gotten the vocume to match her laptop.

Sam:  Got it!

Sam shuts her laptop, grabs the vocume, runs out of the tent, and sets the vocume on the ground.  The holographic image of Apophis appears as it did before.  The firing from both sides ceases immediately.

Apophis (on the vocume) :  Warriors of Apophis, assemble before me and listen to he that possesses the vocume.

All the remaining soldiers exit the forest and assemble around the image.

Apophis (on the vocume) :  The warrior before you speaks in my name.  Heed his words.

Captain (to the assembled soldiers) :  It’s a message from Apophis himself!

Nelson:  Summoning his image during battle is against the Rules of Engagement.

Captain:  Hear his words!

Nelson:  When the challenge is over!

Jack:  Now, Nelson!  You will listen to him now!  Before anyone else gets hurt.

Nelson:  The final challenge is to the death, Colonel.

Captain Nelson looks up at the image of Apophis, his expression changing to amazement as he sees the image change from a healthy Apophis to a dying Apophis.

Apophis (on the vocume) :  A host. There is a slight pause. I am...afraid.

Apophis lies still and silent for another moment, and then takes a loud, shuddering breath and dies.

Nelson (shocked) :  He is a god.  It cannot be so.

The image of the dead Apophis disappears.

Captain:  It is so.

The soldiers begin to wander around, not knowing what to make of the situation.

Nelson (to Captain Rogers) :  What will become of us?  Where will we go now?

Rogers:  Home.

The soldiers slowly disperse.
